Quality certification is on its way for Grappa from the Veneto
The first quality certificate for Grappa Veneta (Grappa from the Veneto) is soon to make an appearance: in fact, it is the project for drawing up a set of regulations – devised by the Istituto Grappa Veneta in cooperation with Veneto Agricoltura (the Veneto Agriculture Board) and the Veneto Region – for guaranteeing and ensuring the quality of Grappa Veneta that will make this premium Italian product unique.
As Alessandro Maschio, President of the Istituto Grappa Veneta underlines, «Our goals are to identify the grappa’s ideal chemical and organoleptic characteristics and create a tasting panel that will evaluate its principal sensorial characteristics, based on a project which will lead to the quality certification of the product. This is the first time that our associated producers have all banded together in pursuit of a common objective».
Stefano Soligo, who is in charge of the Veneto Agriculture Board’s research distillery at the School of Oenology at Conegliano in the Province of Treviso, explains the project’s objectives: “«We aim to identify production zones in terms of macroareas and draw up a set of regulations regarding the methods to be adopted both in the winery and in the distillery for producing a fine grappa. These elements will be accompanied by sensorial analysis (carried out in conjunction with Veneto Agricoltura), which is also in line with the certification required under the new European Community regulations. In this way we will be able to create a recognizable trademark for this typical Veneto distillate».
